The Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Bill
“There’s an amazing community of women out there who share this common experience, and they seem to find each other.” This is just one statement that Singer/Songwriter Sheryl Crow says while she is talks to The Early Show’s Harry Smith. Sheryl Crow is just one woman in this battle over the Breast Cancer Beast. In this video clip Sheryl is in Washington D.C. to help lobby for a bill called “The Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Bill.” This bill was signed into law on October 8, 2008. Fight Pink wants to inform you on new ways that Congress is helping to win the war on Breast Cancer. This bill was signed into law to help try to create a system where we can test the environment to see what kind of effect it has on specifically Breast Cancer now, but also to help to create a model for finding out how it effects other diseases. Sheryl talks about how the environment effects us and our health. Sheryl states, “It’s a perfect argument for the urgency of this, the statistics for Cancer in our country alone is mind boggling.” Sheryl also goes on to say, “it’s time we be a leader in this field.” Watch the video, read the bill and know that there is research being done. There are many people who come together and unite in this to make a difference!

“Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, and thus far little research has been done concerning the environmental causes of this pervasive cancer. Drug development has been a crucial part of treating breast cancer, but perhaps even more imperative is a focus on the causes, and thus knowledge of ways to prevent the cancer from forming. If a comparative amount of resources that were put into developing breast cancer therapies were focused on the causes of cancer, we could make a tremendous amount of progress. The organization of this bill ensures that the program, which will be authorized by the NIH, will be as financially efficient as possible, so that the best quality research can be conducted without repeat by other laboratories, thereby ensuring meaningful use of federal funds. This is an important bill not only for the further understanding of breast cancer, and for the prevention of future breast cancer diagnoses, but also for the understanding of potential environmental toxins that may be causing breast cancer as well as other diseases.” Lynn Fang
