Koryn H.- Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things!

Submitted by Stacy on Tuesday, 1 September 2009One Comment

September 1, 2009–Fight Pink–Koryn H. is a Breast cancer survivor.  She is also a wife to her Air Force husband of 23 years and mom to four great kids ages 16 – 21. Koryn has lived all over the world but has now settled in Virginia where two of her kids are now in college and two are in high school.  For over 15 years she has been making mothers bracelets for friends and family. A couple of years ago a friend suggested that she help design cancer awareness bracelets for The American Cancer Society.  That was when she really began making a lot of jewelry for friends and co-workers and designed her web site(s).  She began to receive many requests for cancer awareness items and Koryn began to meet a lot of people affected by cancer.  As her business grew she became interested in hand stamped jewelry and being able to custom design sayings, quotes, names, mother’s jewelry and inspirational pieces.  Koryn would take my bagged up jewelry creations to work, where she taught preschool, transporting them in a Taffy Box that she had from a family vacation to the beach. Her co-workers would ask, “When are you going to bring in the Taffy Box again?”  That is where the shop name The Taffy Box came from.

She began her business of making jewelery before she was diagnosed with Breast Cancer.  She says that “In the last year, after I myself was diagnosed with breast cancer, I have met so many people and organizations who help raise funds for breast cancer research and treatment.  Part of my jewelry business is participating in giveaways, raffles, fund raising by contributing specialty charms for Relay For Life, etc. It is very rewarding to be able to both give to a cause as well as inspire a fellow cancer patient.”

Working from home is something that she has always wanted to do.  Koryn quit her preschool teaching job just prior to her diagnosis, but it has actually been a blessing in disguise since she was able to now work around her cancer treatment.  One of the first doctors she and her upon being diagnosed last October was a psychologist.  She asked Koryn if  she had a hobby or interest that she enjoyed.  Koryn told her about my jewelry and she suggested she pour herself into it. She said that I would need something like that more than ever to keep my mind focused, and to do something enjoyable where I could remove myself from my cancer for a while. Koryn agrees and It is also something she said that she can do while running a household full of busy teenagers and shuttling them to and from their activities!

Koryn is featured on this months Fight Pink report!
