Global Race for the Cure!

Submitted by Stacy on Monday, 8 June 2009No Comment

June 8, 2009–(Las Vegas, NV)–Gena Womack, walked in the Global Race for the Cure this past weekend in DC.  Gena is one of our Survivors, you can read her Survivorship Story right on the front page of Fight Pink.  Gena wrote about her experience in her Website Make Some Lemonade.  Below is her experience while at the race in DC this past weekend!

I did it. I made it through the race with the support of my awesome friends and family. It was so wonderful to see my friends as some of them I have not seen in over a year. It was just amazing to have them there. A good girl friend of mine spent the night, the night before so we could drive up together. I am so glad she did as Stu was sick and could not go, so I was so happy to have someone with me.

My sister on the other hand rode the metro and walked around DC all by herself. She is a dedicated sister and wonderful friend. Man, oh man has God blessed me with wonderful people. I am so thankful for all of them.

Like I thought I did get a bit emotional at times. For instance whenever I saw a shirt dedicated to someone, or a person with a sign walking in remembrance for a lost loved one to breast cancer. I do not know what this gets to me, but boy does it. My eyes well up with water and I feel like I am going to choke up and not be able to handle it. If I look away quick enough and think of Jack it seems to go away.

As we were approaching the finish line this year I was quite nervous
. Last year they draped a medal around all of the survivors necks. I thought I was going to get out of it this year as the finish line was too crowded, so we walked around the side of it. Out of nowhere a volunteer comes up to me and places a medal on my neck. In the same instance she is telling me way to go you are a survivor my eyes start pouring out the tears. My friends and family are no where to be seen which I was a bit thankful for.
I know they would not think bad of me at all, heck they would support me without a doubt. For some reason though I get embarrassed. Before long Laura sees me and notices, but because she knows me so well she says nothing and supports me through it.

Wow, so much to say, but for some reason I have no words at all to get them out. The day was awesome and it is amazing to see so many people bond together to support a cause.
A big fat thank you to everyone who walked this weekend or has participated in another event. It means the world to those affected to think others take time out of there lives to support us and believe with us we will find a cure.
