Fight Pink is very excited to be the first stop in Dr. Chad Moutray’s blog book tour for his amazing and very personal account of his life with his late wife Laura. Chad contacted Fight Pink in early December and asked us if we would like to participate in his blog book tour. He wrote a book about his late wife Laura, a Triple Negative Breast Cancer patient called My Life With Laura: A Love Story. Initially I was very excited, and emailed Chad to let him know that we would love to take part in his book tour. We at Fight Pink were also looking at sharing the Co-Survivor stories around the same time Chad contacted us.
I anxiously awaited my copy of the book in the mail, and when I got the envelope I was so excited, except that the envelope was empty! Our postal system had neatly packaged up the envelope (that had looked like it had gone through too much for an envelope), and placed it within a plastic envelope and said: Although we try to get all your mail to you, sometimes things happen. We are sorry for the inconvenience. So we got the envelope, and a postal worker is now reading the book! I didn’t want to wait for another copy, so I downloaded a copy quick from LuLu and began my journey reading the book.
I initially was amazed how Chad captured every detail with such intense clarity. I asked Chad how was he able to do this? Within the interview he discusses how he was able to capture every detail. Being a Breast Cancer patient, I was also very interested in how Laura coped with everything. I was also intrigued to find out how Chad felt and coped, and I was impressed with how he was able to portray this in his book. As I read, I was drawn into their lives. I cried, I laughed and most of all was amazed at the spirit that was Laura. She was such a fighter, and all the while continuing to have the faith to take on what ever came her way.
She had amazing Faith. Chad said it best when we asked him how Faith was such a large part of her everyday existence, and if it made him understand his faith more. Chad said: “There is no way that you can see all the pain and suffering that she went through… and yet she still remained so positive. There’s no way that you can see that, and not come away inspired….she always had a smile on her face. It’s hard to go through that without having some appreciation of our own mortality, have some sort of spiritual awakening.”
While reading and being drawn into the book, I enjoyed being part of their vacations, being part of Charlotte’s birth, and also being able to witness the love and compassion that was with them on this journey. In one question within the interview I asked Chad how did he cope? He said having family around, the church, and many other volunteers including Lotsa helping hands.
My Life with Laura: A Love Story captured my heart, my soul and brought me to a level of understanding about my life, my mortality and ability to share. Fight Pink wants to thank Dr. Chad Moutrey for sharing his book with us!
Take your time listening to the interview, and make sure you go to LuLu.com and pick up a copy of this inspirational love story!
All the best,
Stacy Martello

Chad is a professional colleague and friend, but I did not know what he was going through during 2006-7.
I have read his book and it blew me away. I had a similar experience with my Mom, but I had no idea how many more support systems you can call on during this period. My Dad, bless him, did it all and until now, I never new how much ALL consisted of.
Chad, thank you for writing this book. My Mom’s minister told me that I had mourned my Mom before she died (12 years of the disease) because I did not cry at her end. But reading even parts of your book allowed me to cry now and experience true emotions that I had surpressed.
My second reaction is that I hope girls will read this book as a reality check. I have ordered a copy for my daughter (22). Chad has the unintended capacity to show what a really good husband (and father) is all about. He never bragged, he admitted when he screwed up; every woman who has gone through the difficulties of marital relations would be amazed to read the perspective a husband cancer survivor. This is so much better than reality TV. Chad has upped the ante on what constitutes a successful husband and dad. Wives and moms might want to think about this too.
I hope this blog efforts will help spread Chad’s ability to help not only Charlotte understand more about her beautiful Mom(and we all agreed in my house, that Laura was truly beautiful) but also that Chad can communicate to others not only through his writing but also through speaking to others about one of the most intimate experiences in life, death.
I have given this book as a gift and I will be ordering more copies.
Chad, you have made a light in a very dark tunnel for people who might have to go through this.

Chad & Stacy,
Thanks for sharing this interview. We do so much over email, but this podcast really sets a great tone for the book tour and captures the real essence of Chad’s love for his wife.
Chad, once again, thanks for writing this book and let’s hope it will someday become a “must read” for all caregivers especially male caregivers for those who have wives, daughters, mothers, etc. with breast cancer.
