Click on the arrow to begin the podcast as Women’s Health and the  Environment interviews author Stacy Malkan.

Stacy Malkan is the author of the book Not Just a Pretty Face: The Ugly side of the Beauty Industry.  Her book, exposes the toxic truth about everyday personal care products. The award-winning book tells the inside story of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics’ five-year investigation into the chemicals used in personal care products and our ongoing efforts to give the beauty industry a safety makeover. Everyday she learned that before she even hit the school bus she had put over 200 different chemicals on her skin and into her.

In 2002, she helped launch the cosmetics campaign with a report that found phthalates – a set of industrial chemicals linked to birth defects — in more than 70% of personal care products tested. (U.S. Congress just voted to ban these chemicals from toys, but they are still legal to use in personal care products.)

About the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics is a national coalition of health and environmental groups that are working to eliminate harmful chemicals from personal care products. Read more about the history of the campaign, the latest news, and how to take action for safe cosmetics.

Also see the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep database – the world’s first and only database of chemicals in cosmetics. There is a wealth of information on many brands, from MAC cosmetics to The Body Shop.  The database offers brand-by-brand comparisons of more than 25,000 products using the latest research from government and independent studies.

If you listen to the podcast, you will be amazed on how many chemicals are in our cosmetics.  We ask the question: What are we putting on our faces, and in our bodies everyday?  What can we do to make a difference?
