Hi, my name is Kate. I was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in July 2011. You are a inspiration and you are a strong person. I was 40 yrs old when I got cancer. My mom was 39. Since my mom had it 25 years ago I really didn't think I would get it. I had two mamograms done before I turned 40. They both came back negative. The way I found my lump was I went wake boarding behind my friends big red boat and I wiped out and landed on my chest. Wow did that hurt! Then one day I felt the lump on my left breast. I waited a week to see if it was from wiping out behind the boat, but the lump felt weird. So I made a doctors appointment to have the lump checked out. I'm glad I went in because it ended up being stage II breast cancer. There was no cancer on my right breast. A month later I decide to have a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction of my breasts because of my mom having breast cancer three times. Why would I want to go thru chemotherapy twice by just having the lump remove. Then proceeded with 8 treatments every other week of chemotherapy. That wasn't bad. I had a option of having radiation done on my left breast and I chose to do it. So my year has been very eventfully. Then to top that off I had a full hysterectomy done because both my great grandma and grandma died of ovarian cancer. Now I can't have kids. I think I made the right choice. Now it time to move on with my life.

Hello Kathy,

Your journey has addressed so many of the questions that my conscious mind continually tries to suppress, yet my subconscious tells me I must address. It's been 2 1/2 years since your post. Do you have an update that you could share with us? Also, do you (or anyone reading this post) happen to know if severely encapsulated implants are considered a sufficient risk to accurate breast cancer detection that oncologists or plastic surgeons recommend surgical removal (and replacement, I suppose, due to disfigurement; my silicone implants were placed 25 years ago)? Also, do you know if the removal of the encapsulated implants (and possibly the replacement) would be covered by a good health insurance plan even though there is no cancer diagnosis involved (yet)? Hope to hear back from you or other readers. God bless! Debbie
